莱拉（卡琳娜·哈萨 Kaarina Hazard 饰）犯下重罪被判了无期徒刑，她将在铁窗之后度过她卑微的余生。一次偶然中，莱拉得到了一个假释的机会，然而作为交换条件，莱拉必须前往一个地处偏远的小镇，协助当地的牧师雅各布神父（海奇·诺西艾南 Heikki Nousiainen 饰）工作。尽管心中有一百个不愿意，但为了重获自由，莱拉只得动身。 每天，雅各布神父都会收到无数向他求助忏悔的信件，而回复这些信件，成为了莱拉的主要工作。通过这些信件，莱拉渐渐开始了解这个世界里存在的纠葛和矛盾，她原本狭隘的内心，亦因此而日渐开阔。随着时间的推移，信件越来越少，直至完全消失，此时，莱拉的工作也已完成准备离开，然而她发现，雅各布神父似乎陷入了迷惘之中。
