Zamanın, hatıraları ne kadar güçlü olurlarsa olsunlar bir şekilde sildiğinin bilincinde olan sinemacı Alain Resnais (daha sonra Hiroshima, mon amour-Hiroşima Sevgilim ve L'Année dernière Marienbad-Geçen yıl Marienbad'da gibi filmlerle yönetmen olarak daha da büyük bir ün kazanır), Nazi zulmünü filme almaya karar verdi; hem bu zulüm gelecek kuşaklara aktarılabilsin hem de birbirimize neler yapabildiğimizi hatırlatan kalıcı bir yapıt olsun diye.
