Havajský právnik Matt King prežíva ťažké obdobie. Jeho žena Elizabeth leží viac než tri týždne v kóme, je v beznádejnom stave a on má na starosti nielen 10-ročnú dcéru Scottie a 17-ročnú dcéru Alexandru, ktoré mu dávajú poriadne zabrať, ale aj dôležitú pozemkovú transakciu, pri ktorej zastupuje svoj široko rozvetvený tunajší rod. Aby toho nebolo málo, dozvie sa, že mu manželka, s ktorou nemal ideálny vzťah, bola neverná. Rozhodne sa nájsť a spoznať jej milenca, aj keď nevie, čo od neho môže očakávať. Počas krátkeho času sa tak on, ako aj jeho deti musia vyrovnať s neodvratnou smrťu blízkeho človeka, prekonať odcudzenie a nájsť nové rodinné väzby.
