Protagonista del film è Laure, 10 anni, appena arrivata in un nuovo quartiere di Parigi con i genitori e la sorella più piccola, Jeanne. Un po' per gioco, un po' per realizzare un sogno segreto, Laure decide di presentarsi ai nuovi amici come fosse un maschio, Mickaël: il modo in cui si veste e si pettina, l'impeto con cui si azzuffa e gioca a calcio, non sembrano lasciar dubbi sulla sua identità e Mickaël è accettato nella comitiva. L'inizio della scuola però è dietro l'angolo e il gioco dei travestimenti si complica, tanto più che i genitori sono all’oscuro di tutto e Laure/Mickaël ha stretto un legame speciale con la coetanea Lisa.
