L'incontro con un giovane che diceva di voler andare in Olanda per sottoporsi al suicidio assistito (Vedi legge sull'eutanasia in Olanda e il caso Chabot 1991-95 NdR) è stato lo spunto iniziale che ha ispirato la trama. Il ragazzo era convinto che questa fosse lunica soluzione per porre fine a un'esistenza che reputava poco dignitosa. Una presa di posizione estrema, difficilmente condivisibile, non praticabile per un cittadino straniero. Il film inizia con un sogno: un volo radente sulla superficie del mare, come solo un gabbiano può fare. Un corpo umano che sprofonda nel blu, una lenta risalita verso la superficie. L'uomo emerge, solo in mezzo al mare.
