The Descendants er et skævt drama med George Clooney som Matt King - en stenrig landejer bosat på Hawaii. Da hans kone ender i koma efter en bådulykke, står den ellers ligeglade King pludseligt tilbage som alenefar. Nu må han lære sine to døtre bedre at kende og tage stilling til sin fortid samt omfavne sin fremtid. Midt i de dramatiske omstændigheder overvejer King desuden at sælge familiens land, som er nedarvet fra hawaiianske kongelige og missionærer.
