Osmdesát čtyři let vstával texaský rančer Charlie Bankston za úsvitu a říkal, že to k práci kovboje patří. Po jeho smrti je ale budoucnost jeho milovaného ranče nejistá. Svůj podíl z dobytkářské farmy odkázal vnučce Jake, která před osmi lety opustila ranč, a tím také odešla ze života svého otce Willa, jehož dodnes viní z předčasné smrti matky. Mladá žena si ale nemůže dovolit farmu udržovat sama, navíc je potřeba zaplatit vysokou dědickou daň. Co je snad ale ještě horší, dcera ani její otec nemohou zapomenout na léta hořkosti, která jsou mezi nimi.
